The first stop of our Akita trip was the city called “Kazuno.” We stopped at a roadside service station in Kazuno city called “Antoraa.” Before lunch time, we stopped by the riverside beside Anoraa and enjoyed the beautiful view of autumn leaves!

In Antoraa, we had the ‘Wappa’ meal as our lunch. The word ‘Wappa’ in Japanese means the traditional Japanese lunch box made by cedar (Japanese called ‘Sugi’) or cypress (Japanese called ‘Hinoki’.) This kind of Japanese traditional woodcraft is also called ‘Magewappa’ since generally the lunch boxes are made by bending the sliced thin wood boards into a circle or oval shape.

Inside our ‘Magewappa’ lunch boxes are rice served with ‘Hachimantai Pork’ which is bred in Kazuno area of North-Eastern area Akita in abundance of natural resources. The rice is filled with the fragrance of wood because the heat of the rice comes into the surface of ‘Magewappa’ lunch boxes.

Just next to Antoraa, there is an exhibition of the festival floats from the “Hanawabayashi” festival which is one of the top 3 music festival of Japan. Normally the festival is held in August every year. If you are in Japan during that time, you should come and enjoy the Japanese style music festival filled with passion!

Each float represents different spirit of each city in the Akita prefecture. After the festival, the floats are all displayed in the exhibition letting us see the real floats used in the festival!
