Aomori City in Aomori Prefecture is famous for a lot of things, including apple and seafood products. As a way to introduce the uniqueness of its seafood products, Aomori offers a unique rice bowl experience: Nokkedon.

My Nokkedon, I was starting to eat while I remember I need to take the picture

Nokkedon is a bowl of rice with seafood toppings that you can add by yourself within the area of a market called Aomori Gyosai Central (青森魚菜セントラル), literally translated as Aomori Fish & Vegetable Central.

The way to enjoy Nokkedon is really easy. There is a ticket booth at one end of the market selling coupons that will be used to exchange with the food (rice and toppings). The ticket booth sells tickets by 5 tickets and/or 10 tickets depending on whether you would like to eat a lot, eat with a lot of topping, or just eat to enjoy the different topping (not to be full). The reason of the ticket booth to sell tickets in 5 and/or 10 is, as each food has different value, there is topping with higher price which have to be paid higher thus it needs 2 or 3 tickets to be able to get the topping. However, most topping would only cost 1 or 2 tickets, but probably there is limited sale of topping which probably would cost higher and you want to try it. 5 tickets cost 540 yen while 10 tickets cost 1080 yen.

Just for an example, a bowl full of rice would cost 2 tickets while half portion cost 1 ticket. As it is in the for of a central market, you have to walk around to know what the market is offering for the toppings. The market booths that include in the Nokkedon service have specific sign and by walking around, you would know that there is cheaper price of topping in a booth compared to other booth. There is no internet service network to know what they are serving. Sometimes, the topping would also differ based on the season, so learn the season first before going there.

It was fun to me to walking around the area and getting as many topping as I could. One of the booths also offers me service by adding one more topping as a free meal. There is always fun thing while you are able to speak other language.
